Many of my clients’ books are in print and gathering healing momentum. So you can take heart for your own book’s possibilities!
At the same time, the stories on this page include not only books in print, but also books in progress. This does not necessarily make their authors new on the job; some have been at it for years.
This is not unusual for a book of substance. Contrary to some pop-motivational marketing you may run across, it rarely works to try to write a book in a month ~ or a weekend. Deeper books, the kinds that really transform their readers (and their writers) almost always take longer. It’s not just the getting it down on paper. It’s the deepening that comes with going back into the writing, once you know what you’re really saying, and where its inner life is leading you as you write it.
May the following accounts of these wonderful clients, their books, and their work with me encourage you greatly for your own.

RAHIMA WARREN / THE STAR-SEER’S PROPHECY trilogy (a fantasy novel of the healing journey)

~ About the books and their creation ~
Rahima Warren, MFT (retired), is the author of a visionary trilogy about the healing journey, The Star-Seer’s Prophecy. Book One, Dark Innocence and Book Two, Fierce Blessings are in print (Rose Press 2011, 2015). Book Three, Perilous Bliss, will be published in 2017.
Rahima worked with me in a variety of capacities: I was her Book Developer, her editor, and also her publisher. I am immensely grateful to her for her depth, dedication, and healing path, and how her books guide and embody the healing. She has this to say about our working relationship:
It’s been really wonderful working with Naomi. She is so kind and supportive and gentle and appreciative, yet perceptive of the places where my book needed improvement, from commas to emotional nuances.
“Her faith in my book has been and is still very important to me in keeping my inner critic at bay. She has inspired me to honor what I have written by doing the work necessary to bring it into the coherent and beautiful form it deserves.”
Both volumes have been gathering an ardent following ~ reviews as well as fan mail from people who have experienced actual healing from reading her book. “I could safely start to heal old wounds,” one reader, Tetja Ann Barbee, communicated to the author. “And it all happened through the story….
By living vicariously through the characters in a safe, fun, and captivating manner, I began to relate to my own dark and deep feelings. I found I could safely start to heal old wounds, and question things about my own beliefs. And it all happened through the story’s presentation of terrible suffering, acceptance, and growth, as opposed to having to analyze myself. I cried and laughed a lot, and consciously decided that if these characters can face such horrendous pain and evil, and come out to a place of lightness and beauty and love, so can I.”
About the book (from the back-cover copy):
This enthralling and sensuous adventure of the soul is the story of the slave Kyr’s arduous journey from the evil and pain of the [tyrant] Soul-Drinker’s hell, to redemption, love and enlightenment ~ from dark innocent to enlightened sage. His story will take you on a challenging and inspiring journey into the depths and heights of the fierce gift that is life as a human being.
“For anyone who loves the power of myth and a deep, riveting story well told … who yearns for a better world through the difficult, rewarding work of inner transformation … who has known suffering and darkness, and seeks to live in the light ~ this deeply affecting fantasy will be an intimate companion on the journey to wholeness, a guide to healing seemingly unforgivable transgressions.”
Like eating thick, dark chocolate ~ deep, rich, dense ~ and very hard to put down.” ~ Ivana Marshall, MS

LARRY DECKER / THE ALCHEMY OF COMBAT: Transforming Trauma in Combat Veterans
Want to see what kind of influential attentions a book can receive ~ and then make possible for its readers?
Read about my client Dr. Larry Decker‘s experience of working with me, below. Then read the interview with him in Psychology Today by deep journalist Pythia Peay.
Larry R. Decker, PhD, is the author of The Alchemy of Combat: Transforming Trauma in Combat Veterans: A guide for therapists, as well as family, friends, loved ones, colleagues, and others who care. Suluk Press/Omega Publications (2015).
When Larry brought me his completed, many-years-in-the-making manuscript for editing, I quickly realized what a diamond-in-the-rough it was. I sensed that this book~ if pruned, more fully illustrated with stories, and structured for reading flow ~ could provide a stunning and profound healing experience for its readers. Over the course of our collaboration, a magnificent healing work emerged, which is now in print and having a significant impact.
- The Foreword is by Karl Marlantes, USMC, author of the NY Times best-selling book, What It Is Like To Go To War.
- An excerpt appears in the anthology, America on the Couch: Psychological Perspectives on American Politics and Culture, by deep journalist Pythia Peay.
- Dr. Decker was interviewed by Pythia Peay in Psychology Today because of his book’s publication.
Larry says about our work together:
You took my manuscript and turned it into a book! I can’t even begin to thank you enough.”
As several of the book’s reviews put it:
- “The Alchemy of Combat is a must read for veterans, anyone working with veterans…. Ultimately, spiritual transformation heals all wounds, and Dr. Larry Decker clearly has dedicated his professional life to support this process in veterans, beautifully capturing the process in this book.” ~ Dr. Keith Witt, author of Integral Mindfulness
- “Through the deeply moving stories of veterans he has worked with over the years, Decker shows how ancient spiritual wisdom adds a vital missing dimension to conventional therapeutic techniques. Through this powerful alchemy, veterans are able to achieve ‘post-traumatic growth’ by discovering what they most desperately yearn for: a renewed sense of purpose to equal what they felt in military service, and the gold of meaning concealed within the depths of their suffering.” ~ Pythia Peay, author of America on the Couch: Psychological Perspectives on American Politics and Culture

Barbara Hanneloré / THE MOON AND YOU: A Woman’s Guide to an Easier Monthly Cycle (finalist, Indie Excellence Book Awards; winner, Silver Award from Living Now)
Want to be inspired by the kind of recognition that a book can earn? The palpable healing that a book can bring to its readers?
My client Barbara Hanneloré‘s book ~ The Moon and You: A Woman’s Guide to an Easier Monthly Cycle ~ was the Finalist for the Indie Excellence Book Awards, and also won the Silver Award from the Living Now Book Awards.
Equally importantly, her book has helped countless readers ~ including health professionals and educators, and simply women who have been benefiting from its healing wisdom.
~ About the book, its creation, and working with me ~
In the case of Barbara Hanneloré, the Founder and Mentor of Women’s Way Moon Cycles, my role was as a developmental and substantive editor. She approached me with a fairly complete manuscript on revisioning how we view the feminine menstrual cycle. She knew that the writing needed clarity, improved structural flow, and overall editing for her book to look professional and her message to be received enthusiastically by its readers. In editing the manuscript, that was exactly what I aimed for.
It worked! The Moon and You has helped countless readers, including health professionals and educators, and has been recognized through prestigious awards: Finalist, Indie Excellence Book Awards, and the Silver Award from Living Now.
About the book: As the promotional copy for the book announces, “Finally, a book to honor a topic that has been neglected and misunderstood for far too long. The message here brings ancient traditions into modern life, giving women a simple model for self care using the rhythms of nature as a guide. Practical and comforting ways to support your cycle. You’ll wish you had learned these validating concepts long ago!”
Reader response has been as enthusiastic as the author hoped for. “It’s about time a book like this was written. It really validates and celebrates the sacredness of our bodies and cycles. This is a book I would recommend to clients.”~ Jane Schmidt, founder, Parent Coaching NW
Of her work with me, Barbara says:
When I decided to dive into all the notes I had collected and really turn my outline into a book, Naomi Rose was an invaluable partner on the journey.
“She understood what I wanted to say, and made sure that my thoughts flowed smoothly. Her grasp of the book extended from the overall vision down to the details, and even in small ways—by completing a phrase or rearranging a sentence or paragraph here and there—she created an appealing whole out of the many ideas I had to share.
“Her insights and her gift for understanding my message raised my confidence so much. She shared my vision, and was genuinely excited about getting this book out into the world.
“The book is now changing lives, and finding its way into homes and hearts around the world. She offered the support I needed to create the book that I dared to dream was possible. Thank you so much, Naomi!”
CLAUDIO NARANJO, MD / HEALING CIVILIZATION: Bringing Personal Transformation into the Societal Realm / Foreword by Dr. Jean Houston
In this ground-breaking book, noted Chilean-born psychiatrist and consciousness pioneer Dr. Claudio Naranjo, who first created descriptions of the Enneagram character types, now applies over 30 years of transformational work with individuals and groups to the societal realm, to heal our collective illness.
When Claudio called me in to participate in his ambitious book-project, Healing Civilization, he had already written the manuscript ~ in Spanish. Someone else then had done a rough translation into English, and it desperately needed editing.
I was honored to have a hand in this. I knew Claudio both personally and through his influential body of work. I entered into the editing with the mindset of a passionate beginner. Could I understand and relate to everything on the page? Was it clear enough to engage me fully? If not, what could I do to make it as accessible as possible, while fully retaining the author’s voice and intention? And so I rolled up my sleeves, sharpened the pencil of my mind, asked for a receptive heart, and began.
The result was a book that has since sold internationally and continuously. It’s gratifying to know that so many people have had the opportunity to open to its brilliant wisdom, and that my “diamond-cutting” helped. And I still, to this day, make use of its transformative perspective in my own inner and outer life.
“Claudio Naranjo is at the forefront of those seeking to transform the world. For anyone wanting to make a difference for the better, Healing Civilization is a must-read!” ~ Michael Toms, New Dimensions Radio
Of his work with me, Claudio said:
I owe the present edition of my book to Naomi Rose, to whom I am indebted. An experienced editor and writing coach helping people find their own depth through self-expression, I trusted that she would be the right person to revise my manuscript. She was moved by its content and not only was grateful for the opportunity to read it but also expressed the wish that she might be of further help in its becoming known to the English-speaking public.
“I like the idea of having my book produced with such maternal care and deep appreciation.”
DOREEN HAMILTON, PhD / ESSENTIAL SPEAKING: The 7-Step Guide to Finding Your Real Voice
Doreen Hamilton, PhD, a Clinical Psychologist, and Facilitator with Speaking Circles,® first approached me because she wanted to write a book about her approach to public speaking (a topic said to be the #1 fear, ranking right after the fear of death). As the book’s Introduction would later put it, “Many people are crippled in their personal and professional lives by a deep fear of public speaking. As a result, their true potential remains unrealized.”
Her approach to public speaking turned out to have zero to do with performing, but instead about being genuine and connected to one’s own heart, and thus to the heart of the audience. Like so many healers, the gift she had to give emerged from mastering her own wounded-healer experience. So Doreen no longer had fears about public speaking.
However, she did have fears about writing a book. The experience, years before, of writing and having to defend her PhD dissertation had been grueling. So to give her space to find her own way, we allowed the psychological and spiritual healing process to take the forefront of our conversations about writing a book, for a time. Once ease organically settled into her, she moved into writing the book, and completed it on her own.
Benefits: Now in print, Essential Speaking has helped countless readers to speak in front of audiences and derive great personal benefit and fulfillment from that.
The author has also benefited by having this book available to readers. Doreen’s original goals to serve, as well as to expand her client base, have been surpassed. “It always surprises me when I receive a call from someone who has said they have read my book and want to work with me,” she reports. “This is what pleases me the most. Without the book, I could not have reached the number of people who are now able to learn about Essential Speaking.”
- “Essential Speaking will help you transform your fear and give you access to your true voice and power. I highly recommend it!” ~ Mike Robbins, author, Be Yourself, Everybody Else Is Already Taken
- “Like its author, this book is wonderful, warm, and wise. Dr. Hamilton’s idea of ‘Finding your real voice’ and her step-by-step guide to doing so have been inspirational in allowing me to see how I can come out of my shell.”
- “This book has the potential to guide you through some steps that you can employ to address the real, underlying fears that manifest while speaking, or really, in daily existence. Recommended!”
Of her work with me as her Book Developer, Doreen says:
The purpose of writing this book was to share with a wider audience the transformational work that I was doing with individuals and groups. In my workshops on authentic speaking, I knew how to guide people to their inner voice and speak from the heart. However, when writing, I was not able to tap into the clarity, strength, and power of my own inner knowing.
“Naomi provided the warm and inviting space that I needed to speak about my work and listen to the words as they emerged from within. She listened to my words before they were even shaped. She was fascinated with my ideas as I shared them with her, and this receptivity validated what I wanted to write. She showed me how to write from my deeper Self.
“Naomi, thank you for listening to the heart of this book. It was inside me, and you welcomed it into being. Giving birth to books that heal is certainly your calling.”
DEBORAH WELCH, PhD / FORGIVENESS AT WORK: Stories of the Power, Possibility, and Practice of Forgiveness in the Workplace
With over 20 years’ experience in business management, psychology, and coaching, Deborah Welch knew a great deal about bringing compassionate values into the workplace, so it was an organic move to write a book about it. But putting down all she knew and wanted to convey in writing was challenging. How to distill the most relevant, communicable wisdom? How to present it? What, specifically, to say?
Over time, she decided to include stories, banking on the power of storytelling to convey her message, even in a non-fiction, self-help book. As its description puts it: “Forgiveness at Work is filled with powerful stories of forgiveness making a real difference for individuals in difficult but everyday situations in the workplace. Guided by the author’s personal and professional experiences and interviews with many others, these stories provide insight and immediate support, and remind us that we can break free of repeated patterns, develop trust where there was once conflict, grow more true to our best selves, truly release suffering, and enjoy our work and lives.”
Here’s what one reviewer had to say about the resulting book:
“Dr. Deborah Welch’s book, Forgiveness at Work: Stories of the Power, Possibility, and Practice of Forgiveness in the Workplace, is a national treasure! When one stops to consider that most of us spend well in excess of 130,000 hours of our lives (and that’s only considering 40 hours of work/week, 50 weeks a year, between the ages of 20 and 65!), it’s almost inconceivable that this kind of work has not emerged before now. ~ Rebecca B. Nordeman
And here’s what the author had to say about her work with me as her Book Developer:
I just wanted to thank you for your help in the early part of my book development. You really helped me to listen more deeply for my soul’s calling in what I was writing, to share more of my experiences and heart. I thought you would enjoy knowing that the book finally got birthed into the world. I am getting really, really good feedback on it so far. Thanks for your wonderful work with authors like me.”
SHELLE GOLDSTEIN / BLOSSOMING BEYOND THE DESERT
Shelle Goldstein, LCSW, PA, the author of Blossoming Beyond the Desert, experienced working with me like this:
From the moment I read Naomi’s blogs, I knew she would understand what I was feeling but couldn’t quite articulate; namely that my writing felt like it was coming too much from the ‘intellect’ and not enough from the deeper Self. Her description of the distilling process resonated with my feeling that a lot of the heavier head-stuff needed to fall to the bottom, so the words of the heart could rise to the top.
“Naomi provided me with a sense of being understood, helped me clarify what I wanted to convey, and organized the material so that it began to have more structural integrity. Her comments and suggestions reflected my intentions, and her questions inspired me to go deeper. Naomi shared with me a feeling of deep appreciation of my work, both the content and those passages where her ‘breath was taken away.’ That some of my writing touched her so deeply gave me sense of confidence to trust my heart to speak its truth.
“As a therapist, I know how grateful my patients are when they feel genuinely understood, not just their processes, but their essence. I didn’t know I could feel the same way with a book- developer! But working with Naomi I felt that and more. And I too am profoundly grateful for her skillful way of bringing out the best in her clients, and mostly, for her humanity.”
CLIENTS with BOOKS in PROGRESS
CAROLYN SHOSHANA FERSHTMAN / Book in progress on healing inter-generational Jewish trauma
Carolyn Shoshana Fershtman, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist, Four Worlds Therapy, is completing her seminal, healing book on transforming Jewish identity.
This is what she has to say about working with me on her book:
When I began this process, my deepest yearnings were twofold: one, that the words expressed would be a true expression of my soul; and two, that in the process of writing I would find and deepen my relationship with my creativity, and myself. Naomi has been a precious guide in both respects.
“She has provided unwavering support, profound mirroring, and has gently guided and encouraged me, again and again, to write from the place of my true and authentic self. In the process, I have come into relationship with my deepest creative self, after a lifetime of longing and disconnection from it. This gift beyond measure I attribute in large part to Naomi’s soulful, loving, supportive and wise guidance.
“Her intellectual capacity is also profound: she understands and helps me give voice to complex intellectual and conceptual concepts, as well as deeply personal and spiritual ones. She is a truly gifted teacher and guide. Anyone who has the pleasure of working with her will encounter the joy of discovering many hidden gifts and treasures in their work and perhaps more importantly, in themselves.”
RUPAM HENRY / THE CURSE BECOMING THE GIFT
Rupam Henry, R.D.A., HHC, RUPAM’S HERBALS, comes from a family heritage of herbalists, medicine-makers, and pharmacists reaching back 13 generations. She combines her expertise as a Holistic Health Counselor, Herbalist, and Medicine Maker with her 20 years as a Registered Dental Assistant in general and pediatric dentistry.
Rupam is currently writing a book about how habits and behaviors that once saved us from or perceived death in childhood can still stand in the way of our radiant spiritual Being and unconditional self-Love.
Initially, she thought to write a book based on her professional expertise of holistic health and dental solutions. But in the course of our conversations about her book, she came to realize that her true passion was to explore the deeper blocks (e.g., addictions) to living life from our true, radiant Being ~ and to let her readers know “that the journey back to wholeness is worth every dark moment.”
Of her experience of working with me, she offers:
Naomi has a way of holding space for me and my creativity that seems to pull out the best in me. Walking away from our sessions together, I know this book is worth writing! I don’t know if there is a better skill to have, as a Writer’s Midwife. And I don’t think it’s just personal to me: it is more a belief in her that says everyone has a book in them, if they choose to go on that journey.
“Naomi’s willingness to go with my timing is another amazing gift. Writing is not something that comes easily to me ~ words flow through me more easily when I am speaking in front of an audience ~ and she was able to adapt to my style with grace and understanding. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Naomi.”
ANDREW PROKOPIS /Book in progress
When Andrew M. Prokopis, M.Ed., PsyD., Presence-based therapist first contacted me based on a referral, he had a draft of a manuscript about a subject he had been with for most of his life. Although he had read literature deeply and voraciously early on, he never had written a book before, himself, and was not sure how to go about it. Still, he knew that he wanted to proceed. He ended up surprising himself with the truth and beauty of some of his writing.
Andrew said of our work together:
I am so glad I chose you. I don’t think I would have come to the core and heart of what I want to say without your help. You represent what you’re talking about in very powerful ways. You make it very real. You kept me focused on the heart of what I want to say in the book in a way that I don’t think I could have done myself.”
(Andrew’s experience of working with me is explored in detail in the “Behind the Scenes” unveiling on the Process page.)
III. CLIENTS with BOOKS Moving towards PUBLICATION
GEORGE TROY / THE FIVE LAWS OF RETAIL: From de’ Medicis to Macy’s ~A roadmap for retailing in the 21st century / Foreword by Douglas K. Barry, U.S. Department of Commerce, International Business Development
When George Troy sought me out to help him write a book, he had no experience writing books at all. But what he did have was over 35 years’ experience in retail at top levels, a storyteller’s gift, and real wisdom to impart to lay readers about retailing in the 21st century. What made this book even more interesting to me was that he believed that everyone was a retailer, on some level. Assuming that this also meant me, I entered into the process to help him learn book development from me, and to learn from him how his retailing book could apply to me. (I need to be able to relate to a subject so that the eventual reader can.)
A year-and-a-half later, the book was done. George is now an author, and I now consider myself a retailer! (Though an unanticipated, or “surprised” one.) And why not? The book proposal’s Overview itself gives good reason:
“At the intersection of history, business, and anthropology comes the definitive guidebook for succeeding and prospering in any retail endeavor. In The Five Laws of Retail, George Troy, the senior executive who took retail sales of UGG-Australia from $0 to $400 million across six countries in Europe and Asia in just eight years, brings to light the ageless underlying truths that govern everything we retail—not just clothing and books, but also politics, religion, art, and scores of other ‘products’ and services. Revolutionizing how we look at retailing while providing enduring principles for long-term success, The Five Laws of Retail proves that all of us—even those who don’ t (yet) think they are retailers—can achieve a thriving retail community.”
As an early review put it:
You add a tremendous amount of value. There’s no way I could do this on my own. I am so impress by how much you can write, it humbles me. Writing with your guidance is like working out: if you keep doing it, it gets easier.”
He currently is in the process of getting the book to a major publisher.
IV. CLIENTS Who Wanted MANUSCRIPT EVALUATION
EARLENE GLEISNER / THE SPIRIT BUNDLE
Earlene Gleisner, RN, Reiki Master is the author of The Spirit Bundle (second in a quartet of “The Sacred Bundle” series, The Marriage Bundle being the first)
Earlene Gleisner’s book The Marriage Bundle (the first of four visionary novels in “The Sacred Bundle” series) had been in print for several years when she came to me for assistance with her second book, The Spirit Bundle.
The 400-page manuscript had already gone through numerous revisions. The author sensed that while some parts worked very well, others were in need of clarification, restructuring, deepened characterization, and coherence (especially since the book has three plots and three time frames that interweave).
She asked me to give her an overview of what was working, what wasn’t, and what she could do to make things work — and whether she had successfully achieved her intention to “reach each reader and expand their understanding of what it means and feels like to stand in balance and how it applies to all aspects of their life and the healing of the earth.”
A week into the project, I told her, “I want to keep reading, and get a broader lay of the land so that I can hold all I’ve read and will read in mind, in order to pull on any threads that may need tightening, plant necessary information earlier in the story that shows up later, and so on. But be encouraged. I know I am.”
After I had finished going through the entire manuscript—and pointing out every instance I found where the book was clear and beautiful, where it was confusing and off-course, where more information or less information was needed, and so on—I was grateful to be able to tell her:
“I loved reading the book. I found myself not only thinking about the world you have created, but deeply engaged with it, learning from it spiritually.” And bearing in mind her expressed intention for the book, I told her, “If you follow those indications and suggestions of mine that you agree with, I think you will have realized your intention quite well.”
Earlene had this to say of my contribution to her book:
If you ever need an expert second opinion and a gentle hand to help you with your manuscript, I highly recommend Naomi Rose.
“The scope of our work together was to have her give me an overview of what she thought of my second novel, The Spirit Bundle. She pointed out possible chapter reconstructions, the need for embedding character or scene descriptions earlier in the book, general syntax corrections, and much more.
“Those kinds of improvement strategies might have threatened some authors. Naomi presented each observation with supreme respect for my creative process and my author’s sensitivity to correction. Most everything she offered me has profoundly increased the quality of my tale. I am profoundly grateful for her knowledge and her caring for this project.”
V. CLIENTS WRITING SOMETHING OTHER THAN A BOOK
And maybe you just want to write for your own sake…
Now and then, someone contacts me who does not necessarily want to write a book but rather wants to share her or his writings for the experience of being received.
This was the case with Roberta Gannon, MFT, a therapist and spiritual director who had written some very deep and beautiful poems. I found it a privilege to sit with her and listen, reflect back, and encourage her; and she, too, received much benefit.
Sitting with you was like sitting with a seasoned spiritual director. Very present, very open to what I might say. Responding from the heart to my writings, which was very precious to me. For a person who is longing to be deeply heard, just sitting with you and seeing my spoken work impact you is a precious thing. You help me to see the transcendent aspect of my writing, so that it becomes an ‘of course’ to think of sharing it outside our meetings, perhaps to publish it.”
VI. YOUR TURN
Can you see yourself in any of these experiences?
Of course, my purpose in sharing these stories with you is to let you know that wherever you are on your book-writing path ~ whether you have:

- some files . . .
- or no writing yet at all, just the wish to begin
~ you too can bring forth the book that is in you, and share the kind of healing that you and your readers are wanting.
